That’s General Organa to You: 3 Reasons Leia Is a Great Leader
It should be no surprise to anyone that we love Star Wars here at Flerish, and in particular, the OG crew of Leia, Luke, Han, and Chewbacca. They’ve been with us since childhood, and we love that we get to revisit the characters later in life, even if it does lead to some (ok, a lot) of heartache.
Probably one of the biggest delights in the new movies is seeing how our faves have evolved from a scrappy gang of rebels, into the leaders of the new resistance—and no one has risen higher than General Organa. As you can probably tell, we love it when women get elevated to leadership positions. The more diversity you have, the better the outcome for everyone! So, while we admit our personal bias off the bat, we’re excited to dive into Leia’s leadership style, and see if she’s all that you want in an Advisor and more.
Read on, and may the Force be with you.
She Grew into Her Role
Sure, Leia may have started as a princess, but she became a general. When we first met Leia in A New Hope, Leia was a young princess in a position of authority, but not power, in the Rebellion. 40 years on, she never stopped fighting for the cause or standing up for her beliefs.
Why does this matter? We’re big believers that Advisors are made, not born. What we mean by this is that professional experience has value and the work you put in shapes what you become. She threw herself into the fight against the Empire, worked her way up the ranks, learned from other leaders, and became a brilliant commander.
So why is this a trait you’d want in an Advisor? It’s simple, really—you want an Advisor who has empathy for the path you’re on in life. You need to work hard to achieve your goals, and an Advisor who understands the importance of hard work and sheer determination is going to be able to help you better than one who was handed everything in life on a silver platter because they know what it takes.
She’s a Master at Diplomacy
When you lead a team as eclectic and vast as the Resistance, you’re going to need to have diplomacy in your repertoire. She understands who she's dealing with in any given situation and makes quick decisions within a moment’s notice when lives are on the line—and almost always makes the right call.
There’s an old saying that applies here: when you’re a hammer, everything looks like a nail. What that means is that when aggression is your default mode, you’ll use it in every aspect of your approach—that’s not going to get you far. Diplomacy requires you to examine all facets of a situation and take a longer look. After all, you never know when you’ll have to work with someone again, and you want to ensure you’ll be able to rely on them when the time comes. Sounds like a pretty good approach to problem-solving and figuring out the best path forward, right? We know which path we’d prefer in an Advisor.
She Has Hope
Leia, in all of her iterations across the movies, has faced impossible odds and persevered. She’s helped blow up the death star TWICE and managed to make friends with the Ewoks. That’s no easy feat! Sometimes, when the odds are stacked against you, you have to rely on hope to get you through the tough times.
An Advisor who has hope will help you when you feel a bit lost on your journey or don’t know where you’d like to go next. Hope is the belief that things will work out in the end—and Leia’s brand of hope isn’t blind or based in luck. Her hope is a belief that if you do the right thing, work as hard as you can, and rely on your friends to help then things will work out for you in the end. That kind of Advisor will believe in you and help you figure it out because they know you have it in you. Sounds pretty good, right?
No surprises here, we love Leia—there was never any question that she would be an Advisor we’d love to have in our corner. She’s a hard worker, can help you navigate tough situations with diplomacy, and at the end of the day, believes in the people in her life. For that, we’re going to award her a much-deserved win against the evil galactic organization of her choosing, First Order or Empire, and look forward to seeing her in Episode IX!
