Need a Pick Me Up? Here’s Some Wisdom from Tom Hanks, America’s Dad
Tom Hanks isn’t just Forrest Gump or David S. Pumpkins (which is his own thing, man!) He’s also one of the most celebrated actors in modern times—and because he’s been in the game for so long, he’s also taken on a new role, America’s Dad. We don’t know where this meme started, but we’re here for it. We grew up watching Hanks in Big, Apollo 13, and even Saving Private Ryan (when our parents finally allowed us) and we have to agree, he has a very calming, authoritative presence. So, we took it upon ourselves to find some of his best bits of advice and see if it’s up to the task of being Advisor-worthy.
Read on and find out if Tom Hanks is #AdvisorGoals.
“We are still in the position of waking up and having a choice. Do I make the world better today somehow, or do I not bother?”
We love this quote because it reminds us that every day, we’re in the driver’s seat of our own lives. We can choose to give that control to someone else or make choices that don’t move us forward—but it’s entirely within ourselves to decide how we act, and how our actions will affect the world around us (for better or for worse.) It’s important to be reminded of that from time to time because it can feel like our lives are at the whim and mercy of things beyond our control—we all have bills to pay and obligations to people in our lives. It’s easy to forget that every action in your life is under your control—and here Hanks is encouraging us to take actions that make the world a better place.
“The only way you can truly control how you are seen is by being honest all the time.”
Your reputation matters—if it’s an honest one, you’ll find that people never second guess what you’re telling them or question your conduct. Conversely, if your reputation isn’t that of honesty, you’ll have a much harder time finding good people to surround yourself with, because no one will be able to trust your words or actions. Think about the type of person who is ok associating with someone like that, and you’ll see what we mean.
What’s great about this quote is that it acknowledges the (very human) need to be well-regarded by people, and how maddening it is not to know how people feel about you. The point Hanks is making is, if honesty leads all of your interactions with someone, you know what they will think about you: that you’re honest. That’s a pretty great reputation to have.
“You learn more from getting your butt kicked than getting it kissed.”
We love this—because as nice as it would be for everyone to think you’re a rock star at all times, growth is in the struggle. When people or situations are tough, you learn new ways to do something, pick up skills you don’t have, and generally progress in what you’re doing. Think of it this way, if you run on the treadmill at 5 mph every day and never switch it up…that’s all you do. There’s no progressing up to 6 mph or building new muscles to help you run harder for longer. You’re just doing the same thing over and over. There’s no learning there, friend!
So, here’s the deal—we’re pretty sure you’re on board with Tom Hanks being an Advisor, now just like we are. Unfortunately, he hasn’t downloaded the app (yet) so his words of wisdom in this blog are going to have to be it…for now.
