Hakuna Matata and Other Lessons Learned from Timon & Pumbaa

We love The Lion King and can’t wait to see the new “live action” version this summer. Simba’s journey to becoming the Lion King is a classic, but it would have been a pretty short story if not for two unlikely heroes that came along at just the right time: Timon and Pumbaa! The dynamic meerkat and warthog duo turned out to have the perfect approach to help young Simba get back on his feet and fulfill his destiny. We all could learn a thing or two from Timon and Pumbaa. Keep reading to see what they got right.

1.    Recognize Potential

While most of us don’t usually risk life and limb when they choose who to help, it is important to identify the potential of the people you’re choosing to put your time and energy into. When Timon and Pumbaa met Simba, he was arguably at an all-time low, vultures circling, and despite this state, they saw something in him and made the brave choice to take in a young lion and nurse him back to health.

2.    Instill Confidence and Find a Fresh Perspective

Sometimes the best thing anyone can do is help get us out of our own way. Self-confidence is a big factor in achieving success—if you believe your incapable then you will be. At different stages in our life, we could all use a good pep talk and a fresh perspective, and “Hakuna Matata” was just the right philosophy for Simba to let go of his worries and start seeing himself in a better light. Whether helping yourself or someone else, take a moment to find that new perspective and take a fresh inventory of everything you have to offer.

3.    They Celebrated His Success

Dynamics can change when an apprentice rises to become a master in their own right, and as we’ve discussed before, sometimes you can outgrow the people around you. Fortunately, that’s not so with Timon, Pumbaa, and Simba. The trio stuck together and cheered each other on as they saw Simba “crowned.”

No man, or lion, is an island—and it takes teamwork to help realize your potential. Every experience you share with others has an impact on your collective progress—great or small, it all matters. Not everyone makes it to the coronation, but Timon and Pumbaa deserved to be on pride rock at the end.

At the end of the day, it’s not just who we’re with but, also, how we engage. Timon and Pumbaa nailed it and reminded us to find success together WE often need to—identify our potential, find a fresh perspective, and celebrate along the way.

Anyway, let us know what you think—we’d love to hear from you in the comments!
